He did a tremendous job of putting us on fish all day. We left the dock at 8:30 AM and we were on fish most of the day. Between the 5 of us we must have caught over 50 trout and one Spanish Mackerel and several Lady Fish.

Shrimp and jigs were the ticket. We had 4 keeper trout. Denis had two, Robert had the biggest and Jim had one. Frank did catch the largest fish a nice Lady Fish.

I did not realize how well our boat did until I watched Rick Uffa’s Go Pro video of the weigh in. Frank sure did find the trout and we all caught our share.

It was a great day on the water with really friendly guys. Thanks Frank for such a fabulous job as the Captain!

State the length and species in the box below Inshore kayak fishing Friday with club member Joe Harrington.   Trying to catch some redfish and trout for tournament.  We did manage to catch about 10 small trout, 5 rays, 8 catfish and a few nice fish.  Joe caught axXX red and a Spanish mack to bring to weigh in.  I caught a xxx red to bring in and had to let go a really nice xxx redfish.  The first xx when the fish got about 8ft away and saw the kayak he took off spinning out line. Fresh cut pinfish and shrimp worked well on the late incoming and early outgoing tide.

Your Fishing Report: If this is a tournament report do not state the fish’s length in this box. State the length and species in the box below Our offshore trip consisted of Captain Mike Kaplan with Team Uffa (Jean & Rick) as 1st mates and Joe ( a long time friend of the Capt.). 53 miles off shore in beautiful seas we came to our 1st hole, approx. 110 feet deep. It was Amberjack heaven, they were schooling around the boat and hitting anything that we threw at them. After realizing that we would not get grouper because of the AJ’s the Captain decided to take us elsewhere.
The bite was on, we ended up catching LOTS of HUGH grouper with Jean catching the biggestxxxxxx  . ( Not yet in the Grouper category) We limited out on our grouper, but caught at least 18 keepers.
LOTS of red snapper were caught with Mike K, catching the biggest. Joe caught a big Octopus and Rick caught a flounder. While taking the fish out of the fish box we found a big octopus spit out by a grouper.
Thank you Mike for a great offshore trip!
Please see attached video of Jean’s big grouper.

Your Fishing Report: If this is a tournament report do not state the fish’s length in this box. State the length and species in the box below I was lucky to have Mike call me on Saturday to ask if I wanted to go fishing Sunday for a couple of hours. I had not fished the local area before.

We started at his boat lift in Gulf Harbors at 11 AM. Tide was still fairly low. We went straight out then slightly South to 8′ of water. Fished maybe 20 minutes and went more South and West towards the island to 10′ of water still no love.

Mike moved us again towards the power plant to 3′ of water. We found a school of trout and we each caught 3 trout and he caught a flounder. We fished the spot for 3/4 of an hour or so.

Next Mike wanted to go to marker 5 for some Spanish Mackerel. His boat sure did cut through the water fast and smooth. We fished there about 3/4 of an hour with no bites.

We decided to slow troll from there to the South channel got one bite leaving only 1/2″ of a 5″plastic on the jig head and no hook up. We got back to his dock at 4PM so we ended up fishing 5 hours.

I learned so much from Mike he was awesome! We had a great day on the water and he is really fun to be with.

Thanks again Mike I really appreciated it.

He is new to the area and  kind of showed him  some of Team Uffa’s hot spots, but they weren’t soo hot on sat.

We fished  out in front of Gulf Harbors, nothing so we went out towards the  sand bar in 8-9′ of water and were catching some mackerel. Jim Had quite a few cut offs on both his free liner out the back of the boat on pin fish and  his jigs that he was using. Then the big storm came  in quickly, and we got drenched. So we fished threw the storm , the sun came out and we caught a few more macks, and called it a day.

We’ll do better next time Jim, we’ll bring Jean on board for some luck.

2.17.15 Help needed for kids tournament 2.25.17

Fellow Members,

I just received a request from Ryan Pinckley, Recreation Leader of Pasco County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources for our help in officiating at this years Kids Fishing Tournament held at the Anclote Gulf Park Pier.  He has asked us for 10 volunteers to help measure, count and record the kids catch.  We will help with baiting hooks and tangles etc.  We would need to be there by 9am with the tournament starting at 10am and running for two hours.  The event is for February 25th the day after our club tournament.  I have attached the flyer that Ryan has provided.  Please contact me by email letting me know if you can help with this event.  I will post under Fishing Reports on the website daily what the status of this request is.  Thanks in advance for you help in the event that will teach kids about the love of fishing we already have. The tournament only last 2 hours and there is food and drinks afterwards.   Please respond as soon as you can as I will need to give Ryan a firm answer regarding our help asap. The folks with Pasco County Parks have always been great in helping us hold our picnic events and this would be a great way to show our appreciation.

If any of you have done this event in the past I ask that you help again this year.  Someone with experience at the event from the club would be greatly appreciated.
