Captain Joe Stand invited Bob Sauban and yours truly for a day on the water… our friends at NOAA showed 5-10 winds and seas 1 ft or less – perfect to head out to +100’.
We had a four-legged hitch hiker that wanted to join us, we thought better and left him on shore as we headed out to the South channel.
Flat seas greeted us, as well as a picture-perfect rainbow off on the distance – that gave us pause as we’ve not had great luck with rainbows, we spot on the way out – but Captain hit the throttle none the less and we cruised out at +40 knots for an easy ride.
First drift started in 104’ of flat seas, bang! Bobby put a 30”er in the box and that fish was followed up by all us rather quickly with 3 more +25”ers.
The current was very frisky, it took 12/14 oz. weights to stay on the bottom, and cut Ladyfish was the early favorite item to dine on.
Well, we got a little full of ourselves on our early easy success and decided we would only keep +25”ers to fill out our limit moving forward.
We vented and tossed back about twenty plus legal RG’s but short of our self-imposed 25” target. We were just waiting for a little bigger fish. Ladyfish topped off with some juicy squid was the popular meal ticket.
Interestingly, we should have paid attention to the fact that Sand Perch, normally the ultimate candy to RG’s went untouched.
Well, the showers snuck up on us and after a brief spritz, the wind picked up big time. Unfortunately, that put a hamper on the bite – the RG’s shut down. Switched over to Lanes and Vermilions and culled our way to a enough for a several great taco dinners – hi-lo rigs with squid were the ticket. We continued the drifts despite the winds, it took 16/22 oz. to stay close to the bottom.
At this point we put on grunt heads and big messy glops of smelly stuff hoping to get the last 2 bigger critters to fill out – all of it ignored.
The wind abated slightly, the skies cleared up and the bite started back up again.
Bobby hauled in a another +25”er, we are only 1 short now. We all lost several big bites that came unbuttoned early in the fight.
In the end, Joe finally had the big ol’ girl on we needed to finish out the day – got it all the way up from 105’ down to within 10 feet of the boat, I was ready with the net…. Well, she spit out the grunt head Joe had on, blew us a kiss, turned around and went back home.
We decided that was a sign for us to head in…
At the cleaning table Bobby earned the ‘cheeks’ for biggest fish of the day, ‘a great time was had by all’. |
