Wednesday looked like a great day to head up the Anclote River in pursuit of Snook so Bill Herr and I made the run up the river.  We started out late at 10 am hoping the water would have warmed up.  The weather was beautiful with little or no wind.  There just wasn’t much water movement and the fishing was slow. We never found the snook or trout but we did get into some ladyfish which was fun.  On the way back down the river we stopped at several bridges and looked for some sheepshead but nothing was bitting so we headed out to the flats.  After two short stops we ended up drifting at Marker 7 where we found Mackerel and Silver Trout.  Lots of action but it was time to call it a day so we kept a couple trout for dinner and headed in.  Fishing is always more fun when done with friends. Thanks Bill.

Not being a Football fan it was an easy choice for me when Capt Carlos said he was putting together a fishing trip for Red Grouper on New Years Day.  We headed out at 8:30 am with visiability of about 3/4 of a mile but after we past Anclote Key visibility was bad until we got about 20 miles offshore.  Our first stop was in 75 feet of water where we found plenty of 18 to 19 inch Red Grouper,Lane Snappver and Vliners. I did catch one keeper at this spot.  We moved to 100 ft, then 120 ft with about 6 or 7 different numbers.  Every where we went it was lots of action but mostly short red grouper and lane snapper.  I have no idea how many red grouper I pulled up but at least 25 that were short and some good lane snapper.  Our last stop was near our first stop in 75 ft of water. but it was getting late and the bite was slow so we headed in.   We ended up with 4 keeper red grouper.  It was just unbelievable how many gred grouper there were. This was Capt Carlos first trip targeting Red Grouper and he found them but I am sure by my next trip in a few weeks he will have found the larger ones.  Many thanks to Capt Carlos and his mate Nick for a fun day of catching.

Your Fishing Report: If this is a tournament report fill out the box below also. Frank called me and asked if I was interested in fishing Wednesday early so, we met at BELLE HABOR at 7am. We headed out to the ANCLOTE ANCHORAGE. We went north about as far as GREEN 7 and east to about 3 ft. We made repeated drifts out about as far as GREEN 7 and then we would repeat the drift. We used primarily GULP in various colors. I used only white but Frank experimented with many colors. We caught about 40 trout, mostly under sized, 4 sharks from 12 in to 4 ft and assorted other fish. From the GREEN 7 drifts we went south to the spoil islands on the other side of the ANCLOTE CHANNEL and made drifts over the 1st three repeating the same process. We picked up lots of trout here and 2 sharks. The largest shark bit off before we could get a picture of him. Only the 12 incher was boated to release. The other 3 either bit off or were cut off at the boat. We headed in about 1 PM. It was a great day of fishing with a friend.

Went out in search of ARS about 45 miles west of Gulf Harbors.  Choppy going out, not bad coming back.  Water temp 85.  We used pinfish and frozen threadfin for bait, fishing about 100-105′ depth. The bite was not great, although we caught quite a few ARS only four were keepers, up to 31″.  We also caught keeper red grouper, mangroves, and lanes.

Your Fishing Report: If this is a tournament report fill out the box below also. We went out opening day for ARS. The weather was supposed to be nice to take a ride but it was not  very nice, rough slow ride out to 50 mile spot but when we got there the bite was on and we limited out on ARS and five red grouper two that were 30 inches, several lane and vermilion and one nice mangrove. Then they quit chewing, we fished multiple spots with the same results we couldn’t catch the final three grouper so we called it a day around three and headed in we fished 100 ft of water and almost all fish were caught on threadfin, we had no luck with the pin fish.

Bob Sherley, Tom Saska and I joined Captain Mike for one of his excursions to 90+ feet of water in search of Red Grouper and American Red Snapper. Wind Finder indicated a smooth ride but it lied again. A fairly rough ride both ways. Moved around a few times and we finished the day with 5 Red Grouper, 3 ARS and 8 Lane Snapper. Numerous short Red Grouper were released throughout the day. The best spot of the day was when all 4 rods were bent over at the same time. WOW!Great day on the water and all 4 of us returned pretty well dragging, as expected the heat got to us. Thanks Mike, hope to do it again!

The strippers are in the river now and the slot limits take effect now.28” – 35” smaller and larger have to returned to the water.  I have been able to catch and release a number of them under and over the limits and a bunch in between so the fishing has been good. High to low tide seems to be the time to catch them. Cut mackerel on the bottom is the choice now but will change once the water warms up and clams will be used. Early morning a top water lure is fun also.Stay safe and catch a lot fish . See you guys in October!

Your Fishing Report: If this is a tournament report fill out the box below also. We left ANCLOTE HARBOR MARINA at 11 AM and headed for the ANCLOTE ANCHORAGE. The wind was blowing southeast so we did drifts off the east side of the island starting in 2.5 out to 5 ft. and then we would restart the drift. We did best on GULP white curly tails. They were not interested in any other plastics we tried. We picked up a lot of small trout (12 inches). Sharon got one 17.5 trout that we released.
