State the length and species in the box below Captain Joe Stand invited Freddie Penrow, Bonnie Allen, and Terry Reelitz out for a day to mix it up with some Red Grouper and whatever else might just happen to come along.Left the dock at 6:30 am loaded up with frozen Ladyfish, Bonito, Threads, Dines, Squid and high hopes…Hour and a half smooth ride got us out to +100’ of water. Current was running pretty good, bite started out strong with LadyFish heads being the favorite bait out of the gate. Within the hour we were halfway to the boat limit, but we had to wade through numerous shorts to get to that point. As mentioned, the current was flowing pretty good, it was taking 14-16 oz weights to stay on bottom during the drifts.About mid-morning, the tide change and the drift was kinda funky but still running strong. The bite slowed down considerably for some reason, those RG’s that did bite were now becoming very short. On the bright side Bonnie was a catching machine for Lanes & Vermillion – the Lanes were running quite a bit bigger which was nice. The best set up choice was a hi/lo with squid chunks – again it took a fair amount of weight to keep the rig down on the bottom. We kept changing drift patterns during the lull, luckily a little afternoon the bite started up again with Ladyfish still being the favorite bait and we added a couple more to the box, there were still multiple shorts to get to that point. As we inched closer to our limit, we noticed the wind had picked up and a slight chop was developing. Captain Joe pulled a changeup and put a grunt head on. It finally got us to number 8 with a nice fattie that measured plus 20 some inches. We decided to head in, the ride in was a little rougher than the ride out – but ‘a good time was had by all’ non the less.Freddie Penrow won the fishing groups inaugural ‘Sweet Cheeks’ Biggest Fish contest and was awarded all the Red Grouper cheeks as his prize – Congratulations!
